A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

We are breaking for the summer, but dont worry we have left you with what we hope youll consider is some quality reading material, also good for wrapping fish once youve been through it cover to cover.
Speaking of fish, weve compiled a pretty decent list of restaurants here in Kyiv serving up the very best in fresh seafood. Ink and Barkus are just a couple of the eateries we recommend should you find yourself stuck in the city craving a little moreprodukty.


The Sweetest Kiss - This month
Kiss Forever Band (HU, cover band), Docker Pub (Bohatyrska 25), 29 August at 21.00
In 1995, Zoltán Vary, Zoltán Maróthy, Pocky The Demon and Tobola Csaba hooked up with the intention of playing a few songs by their favourite band Kiss. Turning what was once a hobby into full-time job, the foursome got serious about the American rock bands music and larger than life theatrics, and hit the road.


Hard Summer - This month
Jucifer (US/GR, metal), Bochka (Verkhniy Val 22), 11 August at 19.00
Heating up a rather tepid summer, American-Greek band Jucifer comes to Kyiv with their 12th album Za Volgoi Dlya Nas Zemli Net (Theres No Land For Us Behind the Volga), yes, titled for some reason in Russian. Featuring music that focused on the battle for Stalingrad, now Volgograd, the album celebrates a 20-year history as well, hence a worldwide tour, which theyve dubbed Twenty Years Slaying Ears.


Belarus Babies - This month
Dockers Birthday featuring Lyapis Trubetskoi (BY, punk, rock), Docker Pub (Bohatyrska 25), 23 August at 21.00
In celebration of their 11th birthday, one of the oldest rock clubs in Kyiv has invited punk-rockers Lyapis Trubetskoi to gig. Well-known throughout the CIS space and beyond, this seven-strong group are on the Belarusian governments black list for their anarchic, anti-political lyrics, with no sign of being removed anytime soon.


Just a Bastard - This month
Theodor Bastard (RU, ethno, trip-hop), Green Theatre (Parkova Doroha 2), 22 August at 20.00
The smooth voice of Yana Veva and the toe-tapping arrangements of Fedor Svoloch have made Theodor Bastard, an ethno, trip-hop, psychedelic project one of the most interesting to come out of Russia in recent years. Having collaborated with bands PigFace, Coil, Darkseed, Betray My Secrets and Shiva in Exile, they have appeared at a number of festivals Fusion, WGT and Menuo Juodaragis to name a few.


An Artsy Crowd - This month
Martiansdoitbetter, Dutch Hound, Space Cakes (UA, indie, pop-rock), ExpoCentre (Akademika Hlushkova 1), 10 August at 19.00
Slava Frolova and her Art Picnic is rolling right a long, and features another great evening of live music early this week. On 10 August, take in Ukrainian gig Martiansdoitbetter, Dutch Hound and Space Cakes playing on the grand stage of Kyivs massive ExpoCentre. All young representatives of the indie sound, join in with the rest of Kyivs artsy crowd and just enjoy.


Summer Salsa - This month
CubaJam (RU, Latino), Tolstoy Club (V Vasylkivska 19), 23 August at 21.00
Stretch your hamstrings, warm up your loins an evening of salsa music awaits. With their debut CD Con Alegria Palante  released just last year, Russias CubaJam brings their spiciest Latin American rhythms to Kyiv. Incorporating brass, keyboards, drums, bass and a Hispanic-sounding lead singer leading the group of seven, they sound like the real deal.

Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
