Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (10) - Editorial
The Kyiv Lions Club hosted its annual Burns Night charity fundraiser on Saturday 19 March, and as this year it came just a couple of days after St Patricks Day, it had a distinctly Irish flavour. Guests were greeted by an oversized St Patrick upon arrival, and were treated to a fantastic display of traditional Irish dancing during the night from Shamrock, an Irish dance troupe from Odesa! In addition, the main live auction prize was a trip to Ireland. Organised by Stuart McKenzie of Pulse and Ozzy of Shooters, the event united the Scottish and Irish Celtic history, as well as the international and local communities here in Kyiv. Gala radios DJ Pasha did a great job hosting the event, and especially in persuading people to part with their hard-earned cash in the live auction, all of which goes to charity.

Lukashenkos Presence at Chornobyl Summit Causes Furore - Whats Up?
A diplomatic row has broken out over Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenkos possible presence at the forthcoming summit on the Chornobyl nuclear disaster scheduled to take place in Kyiv on 19 April.
Ukraine has invited world leaders to attend the conference, and had hoped the President of the European Commission here in Ukraine, Jose Manuel Barrosa, would open the event. But his attendance at the event to mark the 25th anniversary of the disaster has been seriously threatened by the invitation apparently issued by Yanukovych to his Belarussian counterpart Lukashenko.
Lukashenko is currently on a blacklist due to alleged human rights abuses, and according to reports in local press, Barrosa has refused to take part if there is any chance Lukashenko will also be there.

Drug Addiction on the Rise - Whats Up?
A recent report from UNICEF paints a very gloomy picture as it states drug abuse amongst young Ukrainians is on the increase. In fact, according to the report, drug abuse amongst school-aged kids in Ukraine has grown 600 to 800 percent in the last five years, and now 26% of boys and 13% of girls admit to having tried illegal substances.
The problem seems to lie in serious social issues combined with the fact that most drugs are freely available in Ukraine without prescription, and young people can use some of them to get high.

New Tax Code Brings Massive Queues - Whats Up?
Unprecedented queues could be seen outside all tax offices in the city over the weekend, and it might make one think that Ukrainian businesses are suddenly eager to pay taxes. And while that may be true to some extent, the real reason for the crowds can be found within the new tax code which demands all reports need to be submitted by the 20th of every month or run the risk of hefty penalties.

Israel Admits Kidnapping Palestinian in Ukraine - Whats Up?
Israel has confirmed that Palestinian engineer Dirar Abu Sisi, 42 and father of six, who disappeared on 19 February from a Ukrainian train is indeed being held in an Israeli prison.
A court in the Israeli town of Peta Tikva partially lifted a gag order on the affair when it confirmed that Abu Sisi, an alleged member of Hamas, was being held for questioning in Israel. But the court kept a ban on publishing information on the circumstances and reasons for the arrest for an additional 30 days, according to reports in the Israeli press.

Ukraine Still Behind on 2012 Preparations - Whats Up?
Thats the word from UEFA General Secretary Gianno Infantino on Monday 21 March following a roundtable meeting of football experts in Kyiv. Which is a little bit interesting, because just a few months ago the president himself said he was taking preparations for EURO 2012 under his personal attention and he would (personally) ensure the stadiums were ready on time.

Rejoice all fashionistas, the 28th Biannual Ukrainian Fashion Week is over, and you now have the opportunity to fill your closets with the Autumn/Winter 2011/2012 collection! Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
