Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (47) - Editorial
Charity is an interesting subject for discussion, especially when it comes to how money is raised to help those in need. As an example, the issue around Corporate Social Responsibility programmes is a good one, raising the question, which is more important the charity or the PR that goes along with it? Some would argue its not charity when there is a business benefit, while others would say it doesnt matter why the money is raised, just that it happens. Quite often I hear comment and discussion along these lines about the Kyiv Lions Club, of which I am a member. I often hear people say, when it comes to KLC fundraisers, that its just a bunch of rich ex-pats having a party. I would like to state here and now, thats simply not true I for one am not rich!

Chornobyl to Become Offical Tourist Site in2011 - Whats Up?
Up until now, a trip to the site of the world's worst nuclear accident in history has been referred to as disaster or extreme tourism, and requires special passes and authorisation. But Emergency Minister Viktor Baloga wants to change all that, and make trips there simple and official.
Baloga told the Unian News Agency that his ministry was carrying out a large amount of work, and planned to report on the results by the end of the year so that visits to Chornobyl nuclear power plant should become systematic in January.

Maidan Turned into Lapland this Winter - Whats Up?
This year the city has created something special on Maidan Nezalezhnosti for kids and adults alike, and from now until the end of January theres fun for all the family waiting for you on the city's central square. As well as the usual ice rink (which this year the city administration claims cost 650,000 euros), there will be 12 fun fair rides with tantalising names such as Pirate Island, Flying Fish, and Western Train, and ten playgrounds stretching all the way along Khreshchatyk from Maidan to Bessarabka.

Go Green this New Year - Whats Up?
The Christmas tree, or New Year tree as its known here, is as much a part of the holidays as giving presents and eating and drinking too much, but the impact on the environment of all those trees being dug up and placed in living rooms around the world is a large one. And the cost of cleanup when everyone dumps there trees after the festivities is astronomical.
But this year the Kyiv City Gardens is offering everyone in the city a very green alternative renting a tree.

Russia Continues to Pile Pressure on Ukraine - Whats Up?
As soon as Yanukovych came to power, Putin saw a golden opportunity to bring Ukraine back into the Russian fold, and since then he and his cronies have been increasing pressure on this land we all call home in order his wishes are met.
First came the disastrous gas deal signed by Prime Minister Azarov, which, in return for what we were then told was a massive discount on gas supplies from Russia, Ukraine extended the lease of Russias Black Sea Fleets base in Sevastopil for another 25 years. Since then, it turned out that the price our illustrious prime minister had negotiated on gas, wasnt actually such a good one, and since then theres been talk of a merger between Russias giant Gazprom and Ukraines Naftogaz, which to all intents and purposes would be a takeover of the latter.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
