Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (41) - Editorial
Cannon fodder (food for cannons for our Ukrainian readers), is an interesting expression. In ancient times, when kings were on a quest to extend their powers, and people were their subjects, it was considered quite okay for thousands to die on the battlefield in order that the kings fulfil their greedy aims. Then democracy came along, with the idea that government of the people should be by the people, for the people. This, you would think, should have marked the end of people being used as cannon fodder, and yet it did not. More often than not, democratic governments continued to be run by greedy people hoping to use their position to extend their power and wealth, and to use the people they were supposed to be serving in order to do so.

Khersones Historical Site Under Threat from Church - Whats Up?
The Simferopol Lazar (metropolitan head of the Ukranian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate), has asked President Yanukovych to give him the land and buildings of the Khersones historic site in Crimea. And if rumours of Yanukovych recently getting the bible bug are to be believed, the president is more than likely to grant the wish, and that could put this historic site at grave risk.

Azarov Hopes for Schengen Road Map - Whats Up?
Sometimes you gotta wonder who theyre trying to kid, and I guess the answer has to be the people. On Monday, our apparently ever-optomistic Prime Minister Mykola Azarov said that he believed Ukraine will receive the road map for entering the Schengen Zone at the EU-Ukraine Summit scheduled to take place on 22 November.
Now, thats quite an interesting statement to make, because so far the EU hasnt even offered a road map to EU membership, or even visa-free travel. Therefore were talking about a fairly large leap.

Putin Appears with Black Eye - Whats Up?
Last week when Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin appeared at a press conference in Ukraine, at first sight nothing seemed to be amiss, but upon closer inspection it became quite clear he was sporting a black eye, which he was attempting to conceal under a heavy layer of makeup.
At first, we all hoped that someone had thumped him, but more likely rumours quickly came to the surface. The first was that hed been injured during a judo bout. Putin often likes to purvey an action man image, and is well known for holding a black belt in the martial art. It could well be he fell heavily on his face, which, if this is the case, we wish wed been there to see it.

Yanukovych to get Helipad in the Centre - Whats Up?
Theres one thing for sure about Yanukovych: hes not a fan of the commute. In fact, apparently he hates it so much, he will do everything to avoid it. For him, a huge cavalcade of cars with flashing lights and sirens, and the road blocked to other traffic long before he gets there, are not enough. He wants to get where hes going faster.
For years, the Gavansky Bridge linking Podil to Petrovka had been in a state of construction, but it just so happened to be on Yanukovychs route home.

Party of Regions Ties up Local Government - Whats Up?
While we write this, the final results of the local elections held on 31 October are still not through, and may not even be through by the time you read this, but it doesnt matter, because everyone knows the Party of Regions has it sewn up.
In fact, with Yanukovychs numerous constitution-bending laws having been passed leading up to the election, you could probably say he had it sewn up even before a vote was cast.
Exit polls show the Party of Regions took about 36% of the vote, three time that which their nearest rivals, the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc, received. And therefore, theyve pretty much got control over most local government now, as well as the far more important central government.

Concert Masters inKyiv - Kyiv Culture
Entering the Philharmonic, the Opera House, the Organ Hall, and even Palace Ukraine, there are often musical fragments wafting up from the orchestra pit. As the instrumentalists wait for the performance to begin, they are each a single entity in and of themselves, caught up in their own little euphonious worlds. Once that tuning A sounds, however, an orchestra comes into existence and all else is forgotten.
The classical music community in Kyiv is a big one, and as such, there is a constant stream of concerts and festivals featuring both homegrown and international talent. Over the course of the next month alone, there will be dozens of opportunities to sit in on one of these masterful evenings; we have listed just a couple which are promising to be musically magical.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
