Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (38) - Editorial
Landing at Boryspil on 27 September, I was pleasantly surprised to hear the announcement saying it was 24 degrees in the city, which, after such a very hot and humid summer where temperatures became almost unbearable, is a very nice temperature for me. And to have such a pleasant temperature so late in the month of September was a real Godsend. One week later, however, temperatures had plummeted to just above zero. And thats the extent of autumn in the town. In fact, spring and autumn, my two favourite seasons, are, to my dismay, always incredibly short. That aside, as I write, temperatures have risen a little, and while at the beginning of the month it only seemed like it had been a few days long, hopefully the season will last a little longer giving us time to enjoy a stroll or three through fallen leaves in the citys plentiful and beautiful parks.

Limp Bizkit Frontman to Marry Ukrainian Girl - Whats Up?
They get you, theres no doubt about it: few in this world can resist the allure of a Ukrainian girl, and that includes Fred Durst, frontman with US rock rappers Limp Bizket. We wondered why the band made a return visit this year, so soon after their last concert in Kyiv, and now we know. Fred was wanting to meet the parents of his beloved Ksenia Beryazina, whom he met while here last year.

Berdyansk Woman Tries to Sell Her Baby - Whats Up?
In one of the saddest stories weve heard this year, a woman in Berdyansk, in the Zaporizha Oblast, has been arrested for trying to sell her two-year-old baby girl for 100,000 hryvnias (around $12,500).
The woman was detained by police on Friday after receiving this rather paltry sum of money from the buyer, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. The baby was taken to the childrens department of the local hospital while the woman was charged with human trafficking linked with the illegal transfer of children abroad or for the removal of organs or tissues for transplant, the ministry said.

New Dress Code for Women - Whats Up?
In what many are calling a move to distance itself from the lovely Yulia Tymoshenko and her glamourous image, the new government has ordered a strict new dress code for its employees. While the new dress code covers both sexes, the men are simply told they should own three suits and wear a clean shirt to work every day.
The women, on the other hand, have been issued with a long list of rules they must meet that cover clothes, make-up and even the thickness of tights!
Generally speaking, the women should appear business like, but they must also look feminine, stylish, elegant and have her individual charm. So not really business like at all then?

Yanukovych Admits Ukraines Economy Under Threat of Absorption by Russia - Whats Up?
When it comes to Ukraines current government, we often come across stories that make the mind boggle, and it often happens that some of these stories make us think our minds cannot possibly get more boggled, and then we come across a story that boggles the mind to such an extent we realise we were wrong before and hope that this is the most boggled the mind can be. So far weve been wrong on all occasions, but we really hope this time our minds wont get more boggled than they are right now.
On Friday night, in a recorded interview for the Shuster Live talk show on TV, our glorious president, Mr Yanukovych admitted that Ukraines economy is under threat of absorption by Russia.

Fly in and out through F - Ukraine Today
The Boryspil International Airport has been getting a lot of attention these days. Far from simple furniture upgrades or the purchase of flashy new x-ray equipment, it is expanding into one of the best modern airports in the world, so says our faithful leader, President Viktor Yanukovych.
While Boryspil is well on its way to becoming bigger and better than it was even just a few years ago, there is still much construction to be completed before it can be given such an ostentatious title.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
