Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (5) - Editorial
A trip to the Opera House always serves to remind one of how prevalent and accessible culture is here in Ukraine. Okay, so maybe the production values arent the best, maybe the choreography isnt top-notch, maybe the male lead stepped out of his spins once or twice, maybe Spartacus is not the best ballet in the world, and maybe the trumpet got a bit over zealous come his big moment. But what does that all matter when seats in a box on the first balcony cost only 100hrv each? Production values in the west might be higher, they might have more time to rehearse, and musicians and dancers might get paid well enough to devote all their time to their art, but it all comes at a cost. The wonderful thing about all culture in Ukraine is it is accessible to everyone, and the performers and musicians work for the love of it rather than huge paycheques.

EURO 2012 Qualifying - Whats Up?
On Sunday the draw for EURO 2012 took place in Warsaw, and all the nations now know whom they have to beat if theyre to make it to the finals here in Ukraine and in Poland. As the host nations, Ukraine and Poland dont have to compete for their places, but everyone else has to slug it out. The qualifying groups are as follows:

Semi-naked Feminists? - Whats Up?
Yes, Ukrainian women are unique, and therefore you cant expect the countrys feminist movement to be anything but, well, unique. Certainly, we reckon feminists protesting half-naked must fall into that category, and thats exactly what FEMEN, Ukraines most famous feminists have been doing (which is probably why theyre Ukraines most famous feminists).

Beware of Wild Animals! - Whats Up?
According to Volodymyr Boreiko, head of the Ecological Cultural Centre, you might want to keep an eye out when walking around the city streets late at night. In fact, you might want to carry a rifle slung over your shoulder, because you may just happen across a wolf or bear. Apparently, the prolonged cold snap is making it very difficult for many of the countrys wildlife to find enough food, and they are now venturing within the city limits to scavenge on garbage.

Worst Case Scenario! - Whats Up?
Viktor Yanukovych is set to be the next president of Ukraine, winning over rival Yulia Tymoshenko by only a 2% margin when western observers had described a gap of less than 3% as the worst case scenario.
While Yanukovych declared Tymoshenko should resign, it is highly unlikely she will do so. In fact, she has already stated in no uncertain terms she will contest the result, stating on Sunday night that her opponent's slender lead was within the margin of error.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
