Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (4) - Editorial
So the second round of the presidential elections are looming, and the whole nation is stuck between a rock and a hard place. While it seems abhorrent that Yanukovych could become the president of this great nation, it seems likely now that he will. And the alternative the woman who shone like the nations angel only 5 years ago has now proven that in all actuality shes not much better. If I were able to vote here, I have to say I would find it very hard to choose between the two. I couldnt in good conscience vote for either of them, and the only thing that would force my hand in favour of Tymoshenko would be just to keep Yanukovych and his Russian-leaning oligarchs out. This thought was somewhat reinforced recently, when a Ukrainian friend told me he was going to vote for Tymoshenko because he would be embarrassed to have Yanukovych as the head of state.

Playboy Model forPresident! - Whats Up?
We here at Whats On think this is the best option: former Playboy playmate of the year for 2007 in Ukraine and 2008 in Russia Dasha Astafieva for President of Ukraine! Cant be worse than whats currently on offer.
Yes, in an interview at the weekend, Dasha, rumoured to have been Hugh Hefners girlfriend for some time after her visit to the Playboy mansionm in 2007, said she wants to be the next president of Ukraine. Singer with the girl band Nikita, Dasha said she was very concerned about a great deal of the hype surrounding the elections, and she reckons she could do a better job herself. And were not sure we disagree with her.
Now many people believe that Yulia Tymoshenko is pretty good to look at, but Dasha certainly is.

Yushchenkos Last Gasp for Patriots - Whats Up?
One of President Viktor Yushenkos last actions in power seems to be intent on driving a further wedge between east and west in Ukraine. Through a recent Presidential Decree For honourably fighting for independence in the 20th century, the President seems bent on renaming a major street in Kyiv after Stepan Bandera, a Ukrainian activist and soldier in the Ukrainian Patriotic Army who fought for Ukrainian independence against the Red Army and Nazi Germany during and after WW2.
Kyiv City Administrations street renaming committee head Lidiya Ponamarenko told Kyivs Segnodnya newspaper on Feb. 1, We want to rename a street currently named for a pro-Soviet activist: either Uritskoho Street or Vorovskoho Street. Many people are against this because they dont think Bandera was a hero.

Visa-Free Israel for Ukraine - Whats Up?
A heated debate has been taking place in Israel over the last few weeks whether or not to allow Ukrainian citizens to travel there visa free. Israeli Tourism Minister Stas Misezhnikov submitted a bill to cancel visa requirements for Ukrainian tourists, but Interior Minister Eli Yishali was opposed to the move, saying Ukraine is a source of prostitution and human trafficking.

Snow Trucks for the City Street - Whats Up?
Incredibly, Kyiv City Administration asked the government for 70.5 million hryvnia at the weekend to buy trucks for removing snow, just as temperatures rose and the damned stuff started to disappear all by itself. Back in November 2009, Mayor Cosmo said he had 298 trucksto do the job, and no matter what happened his administration would be ready.
But, for weeks now the snow that fell at the end of December (which then compacted into a thick layer of ice) has lain on the streets of Kyiv causing a huge number of people, mostly elderly, to fall and cause themselves serious damage. The streets themselves may have been cleared, but the pavements remain a death trap.

Count on More Street Protests - Whats Up?
It will be nothing like the Orange Revolution because the people who headed that have been nothing but a dismal let down to the people who risked their lives for them, but the way things are stacking up, the result of the second round of the presidential elections is not going to be accepted by either side if they lose, and the result is going to be huge crowds on the streets once again.

Getting Feisty Over Football - Special Feature
Playing, watching or even just listening to it, football of any sort has the ability to get peoples blood boiling. Its both a competition for bragging rights to My Team Is Better Than Yours and a sport we cant help but love. But with Americas Super Bowl Sunday coming up, the old debate returns: which football is better? We asked a few ex-pats their opinion on the matter and got things close to the boiling point pretty fast.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
