Tunnelling Towards Hope

Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (1) - Editorial
There is a saying that says how the year starts it will continue. For those who have had a good start to the year healthy and happy, surrounded by love and with financial stability that gives a little boost to ones hopes for the coming year. Of course, there will be many people, especially in these difficult times, whose start to the year might not have been so great maybe a relationship ended, or theres illness in the family, or work is difficult or even non-existant and if so then this little saying takes on a rather ominous meaning that might leave one with a sense of foreboding. No matter whether we celebrate it with passion and exuberance, quietly at home with friends and family, or try to ignore it altogether, we cannot hide from the fact that a new year is a definite and strong mark: a time to try and say goodbye to the bad things in your life, embrace the good things, mourn the losses and welcome the gains.

Residential Property Down Over 27% - Whats Up?
Not good news to start the year if youve invested your money in residential property in Kyiv as prices for 1-3 room apartments dropped by 27.16% in 2009, and by a mammoth 44.2% since they reached their peak in the early part of 2008. Now one square metre costs $1,673 on average. Good news if youre thinking of buying.
Prices were falling almost all year, except for in August when the market showed small signs of recovery. But after this small bounce, prices continued to fall until the end of the year.

IMF, Gas Payments and International Reserves - Whats Up?
The new year starts as the old year ended: with Ukraine unable to pay its debt to Russia for gas, and the IMF refusing to disperse the next tranche of the loan to help it do so until the government is in a position to continue with budget cuts. However, the IMF has allowed the government to reduce its international reserves by $2 billion in order to make the payment to Russia. The IMF Executive Board agreed to the governments request to modify performance criterion on Net International Reserves as specified in the current Stand By Arrangement, to lower the end December NIR floor by about $2 billion, the IMF said in a statement.

Elton to Buy Home for Little Lev - Whats Up?
Elton Johns not one for giving up once hes set his mind on something, and while his application to adopt the Ukrainian toddler he met in Ukraine was rejected, he and life partner David Furnish are pushing ahead with plans to make the little boys life better.
Back in September, Elton and David declared their intention to adopt little Lev, but it was ruled that, at 62, he was too old to adopt, and Ukraines Minister of Sport, Youth and Family Yuriy Pavlenko declared that gay couples were deemed not suitable to adopt.

Yanukovych Promises to Keep Ukraine out of NATO - Whats Up?
No! It cant be true. Could Yanukovych be the next president of Ukraine? It is certainly looking that way, and before he even makes it to office hes showing his true colours by declaring Ukraine will not enter NATO. Putin told him to say that, were sure!
He also said that Russian speaking Ukrainians are currently subject to a policy of discrimination, and even declared the Ukrainian language to be a foreign one just before Christmas. It will also be likely that any further moves towards EU membership will cease under his power, which will come as a severe blow to all Ukrainians hoping to have more freedom to travel.

Who Will Be the Next President of Ukraine? - Whats Up?
The first presidential elections since the Orange Revolution ousted Viktor Yanukovych and swept Viktor Yushchenko to power will take place 17 January, and it is almost certain the country will have a new president. But who?
Viktor Yanukovych is in a very strong position. As usual, he is the front-runner in the polls, but more interestingly, if the second round is a head-to-head with him against current Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko the polls indicate he will win.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
