Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (40) - Editorial
Ive always had a strong sense of my own mortality, and I think that has contributed to the fact that Ive lived life in such a haphazard manner, with little regard for the future carpe diem and all that. You may think that being aware of my own mortality would make me live healthily, but ironically it has had the opposite effect because I dont put much weight in delayed gratification well, you might get hit by a bus tomorrow. Everyones gotta die of something, right? So therefore, if theres good company going, Im not likely to say no. If theres beer to be drunk, Im going to drink it. If theres tasty food on offer, Im going to eat it regardless of whether it will make my blood pressure soar and my arteries harden. And if someone doesnt quite feel its time to go home, then Ill be there with him. I must say, Im quite happy with the way I live my life.

Who On Earth isthis Handsome Young Man? - Whats Up?
Take a good look. Look a little closer. Do you recognise the man in the photo? Vaguely familiar? Actually, its the lumbering Yanukovich, that gorilla on the Ukrainian political scene. No really, it is him! Weve all been well aware of the powers of photoshop for sometime weve seen it used to ridiculous proportions on every glossy magazine cover, and Madonna poster having every young woman in the world striving to reach a perfection of beauty that is, quite literally, impossible.
But never have we been so clearly shown the full powers of this medium, until now. And quite frankly, Yanukovich is the perfect before and after candidate. Here we have a simple man, a thug whos spent time in jail for violent crimes, an ugly aging decrepit ape whos more likely to hand out sweeties at an official ceremony in front of Putin than to do anything intelligent.

Ukraine Ranks No2 in Paralympics Swimming - Whats Up?
Coming close on the heels of the UK athletes, Ukraines athletes took second place in the Paralympic European Swimming Championships that took place in Iceland last week. The home team really did a great job with Oleksi Fedyna taking Gold in the mens 100m freestyle, with his teammate Dmytro Alekseyeyev taking Bronze. And it was a Ukrainian athlete, Iryna Balashova, who took the womens title in the same event.
Gold in the mens 100m backstroke was taken by another Ukrainian, Yevheniy Bohodayko, and Dmytro Vynohradets not only took Gold in the 50m backstroke but broke the world record as well with a time of 50.54s.

New Movie Challenges Post-Soviet Homophobia - Whats Up?
Dressed in pink satin and adorned in ostrich feathers, an outrageously dressed drag queen runs through a dilapidated Russian village miming to Gloria Gaynors I Will Survive just one of the startling scenes from a new mainstream Russian movie about drag queens in a region where gays still face an uphill struggle to have basic rights recognised, and often become victims of violent crime.
With strong echoes of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Veselchaki (Jolly Fellows) tells the story of five drag queens who perform at a Moscow gay club, and it has been well received in the city where Mayor Yuri Luzhkov has repeatedly blocked attempts to hold gay pride parades. One scene depicts one of the queens accidentally meeting his mother who, surprisingly, promises to make him a nicer dress.

Tymoshenko Proposes New Way of Forming Government - Whats Up?
Not only is Tymoshenko and her cronies already in the midst of a huge food fight with her rival Viktor Yanukovich, shes also launching full steam ahead into her usual highly populist, badly thought through suggestions. This time shes suggesting a new way of forming a government that can only sound sensible to the most simple of voters.
After the presidential elections we have to form a government based on new principles, she said. So far so good. But then There exist large professional groups and before appointing each minister we need to gather the professional and public organisations working in that field and select the best minister for the role through a vote.

Presidency Campaigns Launch With Mud Slinging - Whats Up?
It would have been wishful thinking akin to praying for a million dollars to drop out of the sky if you were hoping the presidential campaigns run by Ukraines top politicians would be clean, but it already looks like theyre going to be dirtier than ever before. Ok, so there have been no poisonings so far, but already there have been allegations of involvement in a child sex scandal, and counter accusations of a years old rape case. Now thats what you call a good start!

Ksenia Simonova - Ukraine Today
As I was getting ready to do the interview with winner of Ukraines Got Talent and talk of the country Ksenia Simonova, I really thought that we here at Whats On had found somebody different. She is a girl of 24, a former model, professional psychologist and an exceptionally modest and unpretentious human being whose genius has impressed the entire country.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Kyiv Culture

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
