Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (23) - Editorial
Recently I attended a small ambassadorial function, and during the course of the conversation the subject of EU membership for Ukraine came up. The EU ambassadors present, in typical diplomatic style, hedged their bets and talked about the complexities of the political situation, the convoluted relationship between Ukraine and Russia, that the EU couldnt accept further expansion at this time, and how Ukraine wasnt ready for membership anyway. The points were discussed, debated, and argued, with people commenting that Russia should no longer have any influence over the politics of Ukraine, or that Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Poland and many of the other recently admitted countries were not ready either. The conversation moved to and fro, sometimes getting fairly animated, and then, as it was quite clear we were getting nowhere, one of the EU ambassadors said it was tradition that the last word should be given to one of the ladies, and the lady chosen was a young Ukrainian women.

Put Out of House And Home - Whats Up?
Imagine, you buy a house, live in it with your family for over fours years, spend a lot of money renovating and extending it, invest your time making it a home, and then someone comes along with a gang of goons claiming it is his house, not yours, and puts you out right there and then only allowing you time to collect a few personal belongings. It would be your worst nightmare, but according to Will Stamper, thats exactly what happened to him. And his case should serve as a warning to all those thinking of buying property here in Ukraine.

Ivana Kupala The Secrets and the Mystery - Kyiv Traditions
Kupalo was a Slavic celebration with ancient Pagan origins. It underwent numerous attempts at suppression by the induction of Christianity into Kyivska Rus to no avail and so, as the old saying goes, if you cant beat em, join em. Which is exactly what happened.
The Pagans
Kupalo was the god of love, harvest and the earths fertility and according to popular belief, Kupalo eve was a very special time of year when magical, mysterious and miraculous things tended to happen: the earth revealed its secrets, treasure was found and witches gathered. It was also the only time of year when free love was considered acceptable. Young, unmarried men and women would meet in the forest near a pond or stream, building fires around which they danced and sang ritual songs. They leaped over hot flames, bathed in water and played games that had a very sexual and erotic nature. All in the name of some good fertile ground

Dan Rothery (Rock) in Concert, Art Club 44 (44 Khreshchatyk), 25 June at 22.00
Dan Rothery is not what you would expect from a rock star. His professional career began way back in 1990 after spending some time in Japan and upon his return to Canada, he decided to take part in a few musical/operas such as Jesus Christ Superstar and only then began working with a few recoding companies. Upon gathering inspiration and creating his own version of rock, Dan has released a few albums, the latest of which is called Regret in Europe which you will undoubtedly hear from on stage in 44.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
