Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (21) - Editorial
Having hit puberty at the time the Sex Pistols and AC/DC were topping the charts, I feel a deep affinity with loud, aggressive rock music, so I was looking forward to seeing Limp Bizkit perform on Sunday 31 May, but I never thought the concert would be a subject for my editorial, because while I think theyre a reasonable act Ive always considered them to be a poor mans Rage Against the Machine. And to be honest, their performance is not going to be the subject of my editorial it was loud and it was aggressive, but apart from their rendition of The Whos Behind Blue Eyes, Mission Impossible, and George Michaels Faith, it all sounded pretty much the same but the audience is. Having seen many concerts in Palace Sport, Ive always felt a little bit disappointed by the audience as Ive never been at a complete sell out, and those that are there tend to only get going for a couple of the famous tunes.

Confused? You Will Be! - Whats Up?
Should I stay or should I go now? Thats a question many an ex-pat will be asking himself at the moment. For years weve been lucky enough to come in and out of Ukraine, with or without a visa, as often as we like as long as we didnt overstay 90 days in any one visit. This, however, is not actually what the legislation in Ukraine allows for, but luckily for us no one was enforcing the legislation. According to those in charge, thats all changed, and it could make it very difficult for many people to live and work here.

Youve Come a Long Way Baby Three Epochs in Kyivs History - Kyiv Culture
The name Kyiv comes from the name Kyi, one of four legendary founders of the city brothers Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv and sister Lybid. The young Lybid designated the site where they would settle, known today as Three Hills (a monument dedicated to the explorers can be found along the bank of the Dnipro near Paton Bridge).
While it is thought that the city found its origins around the IV century AD, it wasnt until 881 when Prince Oleh, the first Prince of Kyiv, united all the lands under Kyivska Rus and established the city as the capital of this new area. During these times, Kyiv, as a new geographic and political centre, did very well and became one of the greatest and most powerful cities in all of Europe. It outlived a number of devastating battles, was the center of business and trade and it became the spiritual capital of the land, introducing Christianity to the masses for the very first time.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
