Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From THE EDITOR (18) - Editorial
Im lucky enough to live near the Mykola Gryshko Botanic Gardens in Pechersk, which, while I dont have the time these days to get out of the city on these long weekends (not much good when youre trying to put together a weekly magazine), is a great place to retreat to for a few hours on one of these sunny afternoons weve been having. I was there on Sunday afternoon, having a picnic with some friends, and close to where we were sitting a family (three adults and three kids) started up a game similar to dodge ball. There was much laughing and merriment, with the adults enjoying it every bit as much as the kids. There was another family with a little girl sitting near us, and the face on the girl showed a mixture of envy and eagerness. It took me back to when I was a kid, and the times when Id be out somewhere with my parents when there would be fun going on nearby in which I wanted to take part the shy adventuring forward, trying desperately to pluck up the courage to ask, Can I play?

Yushchenko Speaks Reason While Medvedev Blusters - Whats Up?
Last year on Victory Day, probably due to the crisis in Georgia, we were all subjected to a grandiose Soviet-style military parade. Tanks, rocket launchers and the like thundered down Kreshchatyk while fighters and bombers roared overhead. This year, however, President Viktor Yushchenko took a more reasoned approach, even taking the opportunity to call on Europe not to tolerate the revival of authoritarianism. You went through hell in the war against fascism, he said during his speech on Maidan.Today, in the modern era, it should be unthinkable to tolerate even the smallest hint of a revival of a totalitarian or authoritarian that violates the sacred right of sovereign peoples to exist independently.

Ukraine to Sell itsStake in UIA - Whats Up?
Looks like the government is desperate for cash (tell us something we dont know), because the government has announced its plans to sell the 62% stake it owns in the countrys second largest airline, Ukraine International Airlines (UIA). Under Ukrainian governmental rules, existing shareholders Austrian Airlines and the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development get first crack of the whip, and the former may well be interested depending on the numbers.

Yulias New Hair! - Whats Up?
The braid has always been a traditional hairstyle and overall symbol for Ukraine and its inhabitants and no one understands this better than our beloved Prime Minister, Yulia Tymoshenko. For some reason, people love talking about her hair and it is almost always a topic for discussion whenever anyone mentions the activities of the prettiest of our lone leaders. This is not the first time her Excellency has come into session with a new do; in 2007 she conducted herself with the same etiquette and demureness that we are so used to during a parliamentary assembly with her hair out of the traditional Ukrainian lock.

Lutsenko Resigns After Drunken Debacle in Germany - Whats Up?
What an example for the youth of the country this man is. Last year he was caught making extremely racist comments, and last week, according to Germanys Bild Newspaper, Lutsenko and his 19 year-old son were prevented from boarding a flight to Seoul, South Korea, because of drunk and disorderly conduct verging on violence.
A Frankfurt police spokesman told the paper that officials stopped them from boarding the flight because they were severely drunk, and then Ukraines Interior Minister and his son flew into a rage, shouting and throwing their mobile phones. Describing the situation as ugly the spokesman went on to say that four police officers were hurt during the incident.

Dynamo Go Out, but We Can Still Cheer! - Whats Up?
There are some great rivalries in football, AC Vs. Inter Milan, Manchester United against Liverpool, Real Madrid and Barcelona, and here in Ukraine the nation stops to watch when Dynamo Kyiv play against Shakhtar Donetsk. The last two weeks has seen these teams clash twice, but not in a Ukrainian league or cup game. This time it was much bigger than that as the two teams battled it out for a spot in the final of one of the footballs most coveted prizes the UEFA Cup.

The Greatest Parts ofMexico, Right Here in Kyiv - Ukraine Today
Mexico has had its fair share of publicity lately, and, while it may have been necessary, it is perhaps not in the framework the country, its citizens, or the rest of the world would have liked. However, there is a lot more to Mexico than bad microbes especially here in Ukraine!

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
