Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

From the Editor (47) - Editorial
So a friend of mine had been saving up his dollars to buy a car these many years, and could never quite get over that final hump to where he had enough cash on hand to drive that Chevrolet home. (My friends arent big credit people.) Then, recently, the value of the hryvnya declined, and within three weeks, my friend was tooling around the outskirts of the city (forget downtown) in his new ride. Apparently the decline of the native currency happened faster than local car dealerships were able to keep raising prices. So thats one piece of positive news for you, even if youre not a Christian believer, in which case the gloomy economic prognoses will be sweetened a little bit by the fact that its the advent season. What are some other pinpoints of light amidst the general anxiety? It looks like Ukraine wont hold new parliamentary elections in the near term, a development that might establish the conditions necessary for good governance here in Ukraine at a time - the world financial crisis when the country needs it more than ever.

Local Starlet Wins Playboy Honour - Whats Up?
Her mother and father must be so proud! Dasha Astafieva, the Ukrainian pop star and perennially undressed model, will appear on the cover of the 55th anniversary issue of Playboy magazine the original American version, the granddaddy of them all. It seems that Dasha, locally known for being a member of the racy girl-pop duet Nikita if not for being all over the Internet with her clothes off, was personally chosen to grace the cover by aging Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, from a group of seven finalists.

Helsinki Group Gives Out Anti-Awards - Whats Up?
The Ukrainian Helsinki Group, an organisation involved in human rights issues, has given out its latest group of insulting anti-awards to political figures who have infringed on human rights. The Budyak of the Year prizes (a budyak is a burr or a pricker that sticks to your clothes in this context it basically means complete jerk) for 2008 went to a number of political celebrity types, including Ukraines general prosecutor Oleksandr Medvedko, who the group claims illegally and against the decision of a court extradited to Russia a man who had the status of a political refugee. Medvedko took the top prize, while sharing second place were President Yushchenko and the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc (BYUT), collectively.

Chernovetsky Buys Himself A $1,000,000 Rolls-Royce - Whats Up?
Some local VIP types are continuing to act with that quiet good taste for which theyve become famous, and chief among them is Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky. Cosmos Chernovetsky, so named for his spacey demeanor (which has long generated unsubstantiated rumours that hes a user of controlled substances), has just purchased himself a new car in which to drive to work: a Rolls-Royce worth a cool million dollars.

Mayuko Kamio is a very young, very talented and very beautiful violin player who has already conquered the hearts of classical music lovers all over the world with the way she plays her famous Stradivarius violin. An Acrobatic Staging, With Some Philosophy Thrown In - Coming Soon
100% of Love Snow Show, National Musical Academy (1-3/11 Horodetskoho), from 25 December to 14 January from 11.00, every 2 hours till 19.00
The Snow Show (not Slava Polunins world-famous clown/performance art act, thats something else) seems to be rather philosophical: the press release declares it to be about love, relationships, familial understanding and healthy living. Somehow they cram all that into an acrobatic show rich with bright colours, fantastic tricks and special effects. For 100 hrv, what more could you want? Philosophy, leaping around, costumes pretty good. Its kid-friendly too.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
