Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Very Good Adriatic Cuisine In the Heart of Kyiv - Take me out!

Over the past few years a lot of restaurants offering Mediterranean cuisine of all different guises have opened in Kyiv, and therefore its no huge surprise that this style of cooking has gained a lot of popularity here. If youre one who has caught the bug, then restaurant Mare Azzuro is definitely one of the best in town. Mare Azzuro is situated right in the centre of town, on the corner of Bankova Street and Institutska Street, close to the Ukrainian presidential buildings. When you step inside you immediately feel like youve stepped aboard a cruise ship, and thats not bad thing in the middle of summer. Mare Azzuro is built to look like a two-deck ship with big steering wheels, fishing nets and navigation charts, and while it is a little overdone, first impressions make it feel like a fun place to be.

Ex-Girlfriend Slags Off Yushchenkos - Whats Up?

We dont often feel sympathy for President Yushchenkos pampered, high-living son, Andriy, but a recent interview given by his ex-girlfriend to the newspaper Sevodnya has us squarely on his side. The young woman in question, who seems to have been rather poorly raised, slags off not only her former paramour but the president and his family as well. She comes across as a guttersnipe a whining princess out of a teen comedy.

Uncle Joe on Top in Russia Poll - Whats Up?

According to a public poll in Russia, the greatest Russian in history is yes, you guessed it Josef Stalin. As of this writing, the mass-murdering totalitarian dictator was again edging out Tsar Nikolai II in the survey carried out by Russias Public Opinion Fund and the All-Russian Tele-Radio Company. Lenin is in third place. Its an interesting development. Russia attempts its own lighthearted version of the BBCs Great Britons poll (Churchill, Shakespeare, Princess Diana, Darwin and Newtown were in the top six) or Ukraines recent Great Ukrainians poll (Yaroslav the Wise won), and the three top contenders are the man who was arguably historys champion murderer; the reactionary tsar who presided over an intolerably repressive regime; and the bald-headed inventor of the modern totalitarian terror-state (also a fair hand at mass killing).

Ukraine to Hoard Gas for Winter - Whats Up?
The government is announcing that it will stockpile natural gas to keep industry going and apartments heated during the upcoming cold months, and as far as were concerned this raises a question. Shouldnt this country be doing more towards dealing with the gas issue its geo-strategic and economic Achilles heel? Heres an even better idea: supplement this hoarding with a serious national programme of cutting down on Ukraines extreme energy inefficiency. For example, Ukraines industry, whether its still owned by the state or by native tycoons or foreign interests, remains spectacularly inefficient, wasting huge amounts of natural gas.

Russia: The Poisoner Stays Here - Whats Up?

Knock us over with a feather, as reports have it that a Ukrainian security services goon allegedly implicated in President Yushchenkos 2004 poisoning has fled to Russia for safety. The story is that hes been granted Russian citizenship, and that the Russians wont extradite him to Ukraine. Thats right: former Ukrainian SBU officer Wolodymyr Statiuk, one of a number of domestic officials wanted in connection with the crime that helped touch off the Orange Revolution, is now ensconced north of the border, where hes tweaked his ultra-Ukrainian name and now goes by the more-Russian Vladimir Staskyuk. This is an outrage, and we hope to hear some loud roaring from Interpol presently.

Why is There a Bread Crisis in Ukraine - Ukraine Today

With huge wheat production, bread has always been a secure product for Ukraine. During Soviet times Ukraine was known as the granary of the Soviet UNI0N and more recently school children used to be very familiar with the slogan Bread is the Head of Everything. Today Ukraine is one of the biggest wheat exporters in the world, so it is strange that many people are talking about a bread crisis, and the price of this most staple of foods is going up dramatically.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
