Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidan’s three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the country’s stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard – and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Ukraine’s Rising Xenophobia - Opinion
I have always known that a pub I go to sometimes is occasionaly frequented by young folk with extreme nationalist views. In fact, I have on occasion sat and discussed it with them in an attempt to understand what drives them to this position, and to try and reason with them. You can, however, imagine my shock when I went there recently and found this graffiti on the wall outside.
“Breathes there the man with soul so dead, who never to himself hath said, this is my own, my native land!” are lines from a Sir Walter Scott poem that for a long time was one of my favourites. I remember watching a TV programme presented by Scottish comedian Billy Connolly who quoted these lines while standing on the banks of Loch Lomond – a truly beautiful spot. Immediately after speaking the words he went on to say: “You have to fight these feelings.” I wondered why.

New Exhibition of Beautiful Baby Photographs by Gaidai - Coming Soon
‘9 Months and 3 Days’, photo exhibition, Bottega gallery (22B Mikhaylivska), from 27 June till 10 July
The main idea behind Igor Gaidai’s ‘9 Months and 3 Days’ photo project is to show the very first hours and days of human life. Nothing can compare to those moments of happiness that follow the birth of a child. Gaidai says he wants to bring love and kindness to this world with his pictures. At any rate, this is a new direction from the erotica and celebrity portraits that account for much of his work.
For more information call 279-5353.

DJ Miami Will Rock the Tsar - Coming Soon

DJ Miami, Tsar Project (1v Hrushevskoho), 27 June at 22.00

Now it’s welcoming Muscovite DJ Miami, a member of the Shine! group of DJs. His dance music will make all the lads and lassies jump around, and the latter (and maybe some of the former) will like the way he looks too. (He looks good.) Tickets are 100-150 hrv.
Call 279-0000 for more information.

New French Photographs at the French Cultural Centre - Coming Soon

‘Winter Circus’, photography exhibition by Dorothy Shoes, French Cultural Centre (104 Horkoho), from 3-31 July
Young photographer Dorothy Shoes will take us back to the cold snowy days of winter right in the middle of one of the most sun-drenched summers Kyiv has seen in a while. And ‘freeze’ has more than a literal meaning here, as the artist is looking in her work to ‘freeze’ a passing perception, a momentary scene. This young photographer’s emotional black and white work is well worth seeing.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didn’t Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they don’t understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street – the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades – children’s favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. What’s On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
