Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Five Reasons to Love Yaremcha By Irena Karpa

Irena Karpa, the MTV Ukraine host and rock singer and Ukraines perkiest writer, recently spoke with Whats On about the places that inspire her. It turns out Irena prefers the Carpathians, where she grew up, to the always-popular Crimea as the location that speaks to her imagination.

1.The Place of My Childhood
I was born in Cherkassy, but since early childhood Ive lived in Yaremcha. Maybe thats the very reason Im so devoted to nature and so close to my Ukrainian ethnicity. From history I learned that the word karpa refers to the tribes living in the Carpathians, and I fully identify my surname with that. Yaremcha actually gave me my first impression of the world around me and made me understand the mysterious connection between humans and na− ture that has recently been reflected in my books. The book Im working on now will reflect my attitude toward and passion for this part of Ukraine.

 2.Mountains Express our Innermost Feelings
Its no news that mountains have a lot of powerful energy. But not all moun− tains will be the right match for you. They choose the people they like and fulfill them, giving them extra abilities. Many places of strength in the Carpath− ians are sure to make you the person you are by nature, otherwise you can go mad. All the negative aspects of your temper will be revealed, so you should pick only those of your friends to go with whom you trust the most. You dont have to be physically strong to go to the Carpathians, but its very important that you have enough strength of mind.

 3.Yaremcha is the Best Antidepressant
Every writer has a period in their creative life where it seems all the words have already been said and theres nothing new to say. But this sort of emotional breakdown can be fought by the mountains and by working in the village. A Ukrainian writer once told me the story of how he cured people of depression by making them work hard, cutting wood or milking a goat. People realise they have no time to dwell on their illness, but have to fight for life. There are many mountain streams and multi−leveled waterfalls in Yaremcha, which makes the region ideal for meditation. Lyubko Deresh, a prominent Ukrainian yogi, admires the Carpathians beauty and often goes there to gain strength.

 4.Most Spirits Prefer Living There
Ive heard plenty of stories and legends about the spirits in this area. The main explanation Ive found concerning this mysterious phenomenon is that peoples worship of them makes them exist. They say there is a mysticism in the mountains and there are even taboo places there that nobody wants to visit. My parents own a small home−stay hotel in Yaremcha and they always tell me stories about the spirit living in the house. Its very important to make friends with house−spirits so that they dont cause you any trouble. Thats why my relatives usually put milk on the table for the house spirit Yurchyk, so that he can treat himself to something tasty. Anyway, this mystery doesnt apply to all the people who come to the city because theyre not believers, and I dont think theyre going there to do any harm to the natives or the spirits who live there.

 5.Ukrainian Oligarchs Crazy About Yaremcha
The latest Ukrainian trend is that our elite is looking toward the Carpathians when they want to buy property. Most plots are already sold, and it seems theres no open space left. As the result of a number of deals Hutsuls have had the opportunity to buy Hummers and Jeeps, to try these cool cars on the local roads. With the infrastructure developing, you can find marshrutkas, taxies and other transportation here to get you to any destination. Unlike the many moneybags setting up their homes in Yaremcha, the local population here doesnt have a lot to boast of. Their main income is from tourists visiting the resort. Despite some positive aspects to the inrush of tourists, there are some negative ones, because the more people come to the area, the less powerful its energy becomes. Maybe thats the reason I like wild places that nobody knows of, and where I can write my books.

    Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

    Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
