Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Five Reasons to Love Chernivtsi By Martha

The young and promising Ukrainian singer Martha was born in Chernivtsi, and while she has found fame and fortune following her success in the international singing contest Universitalent in 2000 and travels all over Ukraine and further afield she still considers the town to be the best place in the world. Martha has a fairly relaxed approach to her career as a singer, releasing a limited number of videos over the years, but she has a wonderful voice that makes her very popular in the country. One thing she is not relaxed about, even though it is her favourite place to relax, is her home town. Continuing our series of VIP Travel, Martha tells us why Chernivtsi is so special.

1. It is My Motherland!
I grew up in Chernivtsi and so it is very close to my heart. All my childhood memories are of the city and the surrounding landscapes, and I can honestly say I know everything about the place. Sometimes as a small girl I was so eager to show people the wonders of the town I used to imagine myself as a tour guide and sometimes even managed to rope visiting relatives into accompanying me on a tour. One of the best things about the place is that no matter whether you are a visitor or a native, the people here will share bread and salt with you. It is a very interesting place with lots to see such as the architecture of the former Bukovinsky metropolitan residence, City Hall and the Music Theatre.

2. The Freshest Air in the World
After spending some time in Kyiv with its exhaust fumes, I cant wait to get back to Chernivtsi and you notice how clean the air is as soon as you arrive. I dont think there is anyone where else in the world that has air as fresh as my home town, and after spending a hard week in Kyiv this is the perfect place to be to rest your body and mind. It is well known that the highlands and their unique climate have the power to cure people, There is a huge contrast between here and the capital as people here are much more pleasant and a lot less likely to bump into you in the street. I often get the feeling that time stops when I am here, and it is the place where I feel absolutely happy.

3. It is Beautiful All Year Round
A very mysterious thing about Chernivtsi is that the changing seasons change the town itself and it can be very different as the year passes. If you come here in the summer, it is beautiful and green, but you couldnt even imagine how different and even more beautiful it looks in autumn with the leaves turning, and then in winter when it is blanketed in snow it takes on an ethereal feel as if you were on another planet. In spring when the flowers are blooming and the trees are blossoming it is truly spectacular. Chernivtsi is full of wonder all year round!

4. The Best Food at the Best Prices
Local cuisine here is like home cooking your mother would make, if your mother was a very good cook. There is a saying here which says that the only tasty food is that which is prepared with love, and it seems to me that every dish is smothered in it. There are a wide range of restaurants to choose from such as high−class places, canteens or quiet coffee houses, and when it comes to quality and quantity there is nowhere in Ukraine to match the food on offer here. And the best thing about it all is that eating out here costs a fraction of the price it would in Kyiv. In fact sometimes I cant believe it when I see the bill and want to ask them to check it to see if theyve made a mistake.

5. Ukrainian Traditions are Preserved
Chernivtsi in an historic town and it manages to retain Ukrainian traditions which are handed down from generation to generation and adhered to by everyone in the city. While I like the way Ukraine is moving forward in the world, I find it sad that this sometimes comes at the expense of our national traditions, but here in Chernivtsi we try very hard to maintain a great deal of our heritage. After all, these are the things that make us unique as a nation, and we should always be proud of that. Whether I am in Kyiv or further afield, I try to follow the native customs that were taught to me in my place of birth, and it gives me a sense of belonging which I am truly grateful for. People visiting the town always stop to admire the way we celebrate weddings, birthdays, New Year and other holidays, and that makes me proud. Chernivtsi is a place that will make you feel truly Ukrainian.

    Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

    Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
