Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

New Years resolutions are great if youre short on conversation topics at parties, but not much else; especially when you try promising yourself something you know youre not going to follow through on, or worse, you cant guarantee. Getting married to your unavailable mistress before the end of the next year for example isnt something you can guarantee. Nor is losing weight by stopping eating chocolates and biscuits at the office, especially when your secretary refuses to keep her desk free of the tasty little morsels.
Drinking less, quitting smoking, and exercising more theyre all good healthy options.

But theyre also things youre probably not likely to continue if youre only making resolutions for the sake of making them. Should this be the case, might I make a few suggestions, particularly pertinent to life in Kyiv.
For those brave enough to use public bathrooms here, perhaps your New Years resolution this year and every year from now on is that you check for paper before entering. Things could get messy if you dont, and there are no assurances that your neighbour is going to be at all forthcoming with his/her share should you opt to reach under.
Ensuring you always have a 100hrv note in your drivers license to amend whatever situation youve been pulled over for is something I might have advocated for previously. Considering all the time Ive spent on Maidan recently in the fight against corruption, Im leaning toward the better-to-take-your-punches-as-they-come camp, and with that in mind, perhaps this years resolution should be to be, simply, less corrupt. Mr Yanukovych, are you listening?
Heres a good one: be nicer. Period.
Alternatively, learn the word pidaras, roll down the window and shout it at the black Mercedes and the three or four G-wagons following behind every time they throw on their sirens and think it prudent to drive up the wrong side of the road to avoid sitting in traffic.
I was told this next one a few years ago by someone I know: assure your lawyer that you will never again show up drunk to a custody hearing. Of course, its funnier when its not actually something youve done.
Considering what the country has been through in these last weeks, we could all use a little good news and cheer, and so if you opt not to make any one of the above your resolution this year, perhaps what you could do is incorporate however you see fit the three messages on our cover. Faith, love and hope theyre what we here at Whats On wish you and your families for 2014. May they be your best resolutions yet.

    Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

    Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
