Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Happily Ever After... On Ice

Cinderella is a story told in hundreds of languages, across millions of miles around the world, and for three days only, it will be recited here in the capital on ice! With more than 50 actors, singers, acrobats and figure skaters coming together to make this an unforgettable performance, we talk to star of the show, Cinderella herself, ahead of her happily ever after.

Cinderella is a story well-known in the fairytale world: girl gains two wicked stepsisters and a wicked stepmother after the death of her mother and father; girl is mistreated by everyone, including the cat; girl is denied going to the ball to meet boy, aka Prince Charming, despite having all her chores done and a beautiful ball gown fashioned by her animal friends; girl is introduced to her Fairy Godmother, who bestows everything girl needs to attend a royal ball, with the warning that the spell cast for these things will be broken at midnight; at the ball, girl meets boy, who rejects every other girl until he sees Cinderella, aka girl; boy and girl fall in love; girl runs off at the stroke of midnight, dropping one of her glass slippers as she flees; boy finds glass slipper and sets off locating its mate, and his love; boy stops in at girl's house, and is unable to fit the slipper on anyones foot, until girl arrives with the second slipper...

What are some of the chores your wicked stepmother would make you do?
There were always so many things to do, such as cleaning the house, preparing festive costumes for my sisters, gardening the roses. My stepmother loved to give me jobs, which would not give me a minutes rest.

Your Fairy Godmother is a pretty special lady what is some of the best advice you have received from her?
The best advice I got from my Fairy Godmother was to always follow my heart and believe in miracles. It allowed me to maintain hope in my situation. Thanks to her, everything that happened was possible: I plunged into the world of magic and this tale. I hope everyone is able to experience such feelings at least once in their lifetime.

Was it love at first sight with Prince Charming?
Of course, as soon as our eyes met, everything changed; it was really the beginning of something incredible.

What went through your mind at the strike of midnight?
Midnight came so quickly and unexpectedly; I wanted to make the night last forever.

Why do you think your glass slippers remained even though everything else turned back to the way it was?
I think it was one of those miracles that happen only with the assistance of magic, and Fairy Godmothers, of course!

Did you believe in fairytales before your own?
I have always believed in fairytales, and I knew that one day my life would change. I hope that in hearing my story, you will know miracles happen and you need only believe in the best. Life prepares nice surprises for those who believe!

Cinderella is being performed by Belgrade-born figure skating master, Elena Jovanovic. Skating since the age of three, Jovanovic has been on the ice for 24 years, and has won numerous medals, including those for Serbia and Yugoslavia in the Junior division. She has gone on to skate professionally and has appeared in numerous musical roles, such as Romeo and Juliet, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker and more.
She says though the production is a big one with numerous actors, skaters and singers, rehearsals are very easy and fun: We rehearse a lot and every day. Rehearsals start early and end late at night on the ice and in the studio, until we perform in perfect unison.
Touring Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the tale will be performed in Russian, and as Jovanovic claims, will exceed your expectations! Great skaters, actors, music, costumes, and fabulous stage means a grand sense of happiness is guaranteed after the show!

    Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

    Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
