Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

On the Sofa with...
Ukraine did pretty well in London this summer 20 medals and 14th place in the list of 204 countries participating. Inna Osypenko-Radomska is a part of that, winning silver medals in both the womens single 500 and 200 metre kayak races. Its a great victory not only for Ukraine and Inna personally, but for her trainer, who is also her husband. In between the official receptions and meetings, Inna and her husband Dmytro Radomsky find some time to give Whats On an exclusive interview.
When I first phoned Dmytro Radomsky to arrange the interview, I caught them in the car on their way back from London.

Young blonde Lissa Wassabi can celebrate now, as her long-awaited debut album, I Love You the reason for many a sleepless night is finally out. Just as a child holds a hot pancake as it comes out of the oven on Maslyana, Lissa is clasping a shiny disk in her hands while telling us its story. Perhaps even, the name of the album is dedicated not to a person, but to the album itself? Read on to find out.
Wassabi was young when showbiz hit her square in the head, and after some early success on the dawn of her singing career, Lissa seemed to disappear from the scene.

You have perhaps seen the MiniLook Kyiv video (on YouTube and other video portals), which has so enchanted the international community. Made earlier this year by Israel-based filmmakers Efim Graboy and Daria Turetski (with music on the video by Adam and Jez Burns), we tracked down Efim and invited him to take a seat on our normal-sized sofa.

As all thoughts start to turn to football, we take some time to catch up with Haruna Lukman, who has excelled in this sphere. Formerly of Monaco, now with Dynamo Kyiv, he is a man to watch. This promising, young Nigerian football star, plying his trade right here in Kyiv, has featured in several football tournaments: Under 17 World Cup tournament, Junior World Cup tournament, and the 2010 World Cup. Whats On caught up with him to ask him about his life, his football, and his predictions on EURO 2012, taking place in June, both in Poland     and Ukraine.

Latin culture protégé, world famous Bossa Nova musician, father of six (three of whom have followed in his musical footsteps) Filo Machado will be here in Kyiv this weekend. Together with the Ark Ovrutskiy Quartet, and three concerts in total, this Brazilian singer, composer, arranger, vocalist, percussionist and guitarist is going to blast a little Bossa Nova throughout the country.

A cappela music has never been hyper-popular, not least because of its complexity. At the same time, this intricacy allows musicians to filter out the amateurs, allowing only the best to remain. Thus, sextet Mansound, one of Ukraines best vocal groups, have risen to the top. Working without instrumentation of any sort, the six men cover all manner of genres, from classical to contemporary. Well known in jazz circles the world over, they bring their sound to Ukraines western capital next month.

Visiting football fans (okay, mostly English) have been known to taunt their Ukrainian counterparts with the refrain, You are just a **** part of Russia. Thats harsh, and yet, 20 years on from independence, most in Kyiv still converse in Russian, and, be honest, how often do taxi drivers give you a price in roubles? So as Ukraine prepares to welcome thousands of the international community in the form of football fans, what will they make of Ukraine?

Ukrainian cinematography has a real, true-hearted hero, and he has come from a background of directing music videos to the heights of feature films. It is not a secret that young Ukrainian actors feel hard-done-by when it comes to Ukrainian movies. The reason is quite simple we just dont produce many. So, when a mass casting process recently began in Ukraine, everybodys ears pricked up and they hot-footed it along. A new movie made in the Ukrainian language?

Winner of Best Ukrainian Act at the MTV Awards in 2007, nominated in 2009, we wondered what Lama has been up to lately. So, we headed over to Cosmopolite in Kyiv where Natalia Dzenkiv was waiting for us on a plush green sofa
Firstly, as in all my interviews, there is the question of language. Natalia (for Lama is effectively, she) has some English, so I suggest we do a combination of English and Russian. The trusty back-up of my dictaphone and, then later, my lovely Russian teacher Elena, gets us through.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
