Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

The goal of yoga is simple: to set us free from the cage of matter that composes our body and mind. And as the mind is said to be the highest form of matter, by freeing ones self from its physical traps, we can attain nirvana. In short, yoga offers us a way to escape our own limitations and transcend all that is mortal. But its also just a darn good workout, a great stress reliever and one of the untold secrets to living a longer, healthier life.

With winter officially starting this week, if you havent noticed the days getting shorter and the nights getting longer then you either need to get out more, or continue being oblivious and follow the Whats On Long Winter Evening Top 10 To-Do list!

For the purpose of having a little fun, and entertaining not just ourselves but our readers too, Whats On decided to see if we could set a few records visiting five live music venues in just a few hours, while taking in all of the live music talent each one had to offer.
In the mood for some live music one evening and wanting to share the experience, I grabbed our photographer, who, I have to say, doesnt mind it when tasks are as fun as this, and headed in the direction of the centre.

Running leaps and bounds and very long distances, Kyiv's athletes and runners in particular are going to be gasping at the chance to get in on the first ever Kyiv Marathon scheduled for 16 October 2010. With three different distances to choose from, sportsmen and sportswomen 18 and older will run along routes through the city's beautiful centre in a race not only against other competitors, but themselves.

Its no secret that getting involved in sports is far better enjoyed while in the company of friends. And whether you want to watch or play, theres a variety of places from which to choose to be able to do just that.
As the football season is just now getting under way, there are a number of places where the barstools have been shined, polished and just waiting for your butt, and as most of them have a pretty hefty list of beers with which to assist in the creativity always found in jeering you opponent, youre going to be all set for a good time and perhaps a little laryngitis.

Growing up, I was always a passionate reader of Jules Verne, and having reached the tender age of 25, Ive still yet to fall out with the adventurous spirit all of his books are imbued with. What Ive found, however, is that the excitement and serenity that exist between the pages of those books can be had in real life, all you have to do is make an appointment.

For all of you unlucky souls who will have to remain in Kyiv over the summer, take heed of all of the stuff everyone else is missing out on. From swimming pools, to go carts, to curling and more, Kyivs complexes are full of fun stuff to keep you entertained for hours. You may even find that you dont want to go home!

Its 07.00, Sunday morning, and while 99% of Kyiv citizens are dreaming away, I am already on the metro making my way to Heroiv Dnipra. I will be windsurfing today, and there is nothing that could possibly ruin that. Unless, that is, there is no wind
Yeah, I know what youre thinking: surfing in Kyiv is hardly possible. But Im talking about windsurfing which is something different altogether and for that we have everything we need.

According to the Kyiv Sanitary Service, theres only one free beach in Kyiv that meets all the necessary requirements, and thats the Kids Beach in Hydropark. And while there are literally tonnes of other sandy bits where you could throw down a towel and claim as your own for a few hours, free spots that have been deemed acceptable number only four. Nonetheless, theyre ready to be checked out and deemed acceptable by the sun-worshipping Kyiv public, so without further ado, we give you Kyiv Beaches: some of the best sand in town.
When we say that these spots have been deemed acceptable, we mean that the quality of water has been tested, theyve got bins for garbage (that could use a little paint), and there is probably a place for you to change.

While many people may think otherwise, curling is an interesting sport. It takes a lot of skill to slide the stone down the ice with the right amount of weight, and to know when to sweep and not to sweep. Okay, so as spectator sports go its not exactly extreme motocross, but its always looked like a lot of fun to play. So when I hear that the new Dream Town mall down in Obolon has a curling rink, I get a few lads together and off we go to give it a try.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
