Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Active Kyiv
Kyiv is truly a unique place, offering the opportunity to sunbathe and swim without even leaving the city! Whether you plan a fun beach party after your working day, or a family picnic near the river, Whats On is at your side, giving you all the details on how to spend a safe and sunny time on the Dnipro shore.

Can it be the big-nobs of our Kyiv authorities parking up, or even selling up, their Lexuses and Bentleys, and buying themselves bicycles instead? As hard as it is to believe, this kind of talk has been taking place in Kyiv City Council; the result of which is to create a city where a cyclist is respected no less than the man in the million-dollar automobile.

Kyiv courtyards have been begging for renovation for years. With no more time to wait, Project Mini-Amsterdam was dreamed up, initiated and completed in little more than two weeks. We head over to check it out.
If we cant go to Amsterdam, Amsterdam will come to us. This was the thinking behind the social project launched on 16 April by local residents at Tupoleva 22v.

The movie Eat Pray Love made more than $23 million in the US alone in its opening weekend. The fact that main character, Liz, was played by Julia Roberts undoubtedly had something to do with its success. But people also connected with the story: soulless woman regains her life. Whatever situation you may be facing, nows the time to make a change. You dont even need to go to Italy, India or Indonesia to Eat, Drink and Move into a healthier you.

Unlike Afroman, Jay or even Silent Bob, getting high doesnt necessarily have to mean a night in the local detention centre at least not if you get caught... On the contrary, there are tonnes of ways to get high in this country that you can brag about to your friends that wont put you in jail! Becoming a junkie, however, might just be the risk youll have to take!

For the first time ever, this year Ukraine will host the Ukrainian Hip-Hop Dance Championship, which is actually the national qualifying stage for the World Hip-Hop Dance Championship, taking place in July in Las Vegas. Organized by Hip-Hop International - the worlds biggest hip- hop organization, the World Championship attracts participants from more than 35 countries, as well as millions of hip-hop fans watching it live on TV. The winner of the Ukrainian qualifying stage, who will be announced at the end of the competition, will go straight to Las Vegas to demonstrate Ukrainian hip-hop. Intrigued by all of this, I head to Hip-Hop Ukraine, to learn more about the phenomenon of Ukrainian hip-hop culture.

Spring has finally come and its high time to start thinking about getting back to an active lifestyle. Those who had a sedentary winter, not doing anything strenuous or worrying about gaining extra weight are now horrified by what theyve done to themselves.
When the time comes to take up sport, the hardest part is the start. If you need a push to get going, then the first Kyiv half-marathon scheduled for 8 May might be just the ticket.

A battle fought not just with your opponent, but with yourself  this is Systema.
Whats On does lots of things to ensure the Kyiv community is kept entertained: we highlight much of what is going on in our local clubs, pubs and artistic hubs; we talk to specialists in their field to get the latest, and most up-to-date information about what the country is facing at the moment;

With newbies arriving every single day, there are handfuls of people who dont speak the language, dont know the city, its rhythms or its customs. While many rely on their friends and families in far off lands to keep them from getting homesick, others bury themselves in their work. And while either strategy may work for a while, making friends (and maybe influencing a few along the way) doesnt need to be a struggle. So in our most recent series of How Tos, whilst taking a few notes from Dale Carnegie, heres a few ways to get into the Kyiv groove.
Before you go anywhere, whether its to the other side of the world (which Kyiv is for a lot of people) or just to the neighbouring province, you should get some information on the place.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
