Ukraine History

A Stronghold of Rulers and Rebels

With the recent death toll jumping to nearly 100 and 1,000 injured, Hrushevskoho Street, one of the strongholds of EuroMaidans three-month-long protests, made headlines around the globe. It was here, on 19 January the countrys stand against government corruption, abuse of power, and the violation of human rights turned from peaceful protest to all-out revolution. Having witnessed much over the years, Hrushevskoho is a street with a history, and not only care of recent days.

Ukraine Today
Acelebrity using their status and intelligence to influence public views and opinion is rarely seen in modern society, even less so in Ukraine. Here, the majority of celebs use their time, effort, and money to enhance or further their career rather than put their name to something that can do good for others. However, as EuroMaidan intensifies, some are making themselves heard and they fall either side of the EuroMaidan divide.
It used to be that when rebellion and revolution occurred, the intellectual, creative, and spiritual elite would be front and centre.

When Walls Can Talk

People have been writing on walls since the dawn of civilisation, we call it graffiti, and ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Sometimes it is merely the creator wanting to leave his or her mark; sometimes there is an underlying social or political reason. And it is due to the latter that graffiti has exploded across Kyiv in recent months. Anti dictator messages aside, we peel back a few layers of paint to look at graffiti in the city in general.

Ukraine Travel
Lviv has always been my first choice when I feel the need to take a break from the hectic pace of life in Kyiv. Known as Ukraines least Soviet city and the city with a European soul, its easy to see why: centuries of overlapping cultures have created a place like no other here in Ukraine. With an invitation to usher in the New Year in Lviv, I dont pass up the opportunity to party Western Ukrainian style, detail the experience and look ahead to what visitors can expect at the citys next big party.

The territory of Ukraine is unique:  youve got the wild Crimean coast, industrial Donbass, beautiful Eastern meadows, and especially great in winter the magnificent Carpathian Mountains. Unfortunately, most of us tend to overlook what we have here at home for whats over the border. Well, overlook no more; Ukraine has everything you need for a wonderful winter holiday right between its borders, turning this years snow escape into an exceptionally enterprising mini-break.

You have doubtless already planned, or even taken, your summer vacation, and your perfect package surely includes the seaside, a comfortable hotel with an all-inclusive programme no fuss, doesnt it? Yet there are those out there who travel in a completely different way. The Equites team is just such a group. Intentionally rejecting comfort and service, the reward they seek is something much more valuable.

The word equidistant is hard to use without thinking of Alan Partridge, however, its hard not to use in the case of Zaporizhia, equidistant as it is in so many ways. Its near the same distance from both Luhansk and Odesa, and a similar distance between Kyiv and Sevastopol.
It was this favourable location, combined with climate, which attracted people to the settlement, back in the day.

As the historical centre of the Bukovyna region and the cradle of this countrys folk arts and crafts, Chenivtsi shares with Lviv, and quite rightly we might add, the title of Cultural Centre of Western Ukraine. Found just 40 kilometres from the Romanian border, close enough to touch residents of Moldova and Poland, this city has absorbed all of the best features of its neighbours.

Koktebel is the perfect place to get in touch with that little burst of inspiration youve been craving all year long. Whether going for the weekend, the week or a whole month long, theres something for everyone in this sunny, seaside town.
Situated between Sudak and Feodosia, in the south-eastern part of the Crimean peninsula, Koktebel is the perfect spot to make a stop.

Poltava is one of the most ancient towns in Ukraine the first settlements on the Ivanova Mount date back to the 9th 10th century. The town takes its name from the Ltava water stream, which flows into the Vorskla River, on whose banks the town is situated. For centuries, Poltava was the borderland between Kyivan Rus and the so-called Wild Field vast territories inhabited by different nomadic peoples.

Letting your hair down on the Crimean beach is a pretty run-of-the-mill idea for any vacationer here in Ukraine. Still, for those who want to explore the peninsulas amenities from the inside, weve got a few options we think youre going to like. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure!
Crimea Land of the Tatars, the Tavria Simferopol Football Club, the Black Sea Fleet, and so much more. To find out just how much more, read on

You know the score with Kitten and the Bear. We are together, we travel together, its what we do. Not this time though. Kitten was intent on going to Lviv for the weekend, Bear, however, just wasnt that crazy about the idea. So, while Kitten meows off west, Bear here growls down south to Odesa, on the overnight train....

For those lucky enough to be able to get away for the winter, theres no end of potential destinations. Its a big wide world out there, with a place and a temperature to suit everyone. We asked UIA, KLM and Air France to tell us the most popular, and they came up with the following list. In true Whats On style, weve decided to save you time and effort by giving a warts n all synopsis of each. Winter Wonderland or Deserted Dunes? The choice is yours.

Ukraine Truth
Rights We Didnt Know We Had

Throughout EuroMaidan much has been made of Ukrainians making a stand for their rights. What exactly those rights are were never clearly defined. Ukraine ratified the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1952. The first article of the Declaration states all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights, they are endowed with reason and conscience, and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. The ousted and overthrown Ukrainian government showed to the world they dont understand the meaning of these words.

Pulling Strings
Located on Hrushevskoho Street the epicentre of EuroMaidan violence, home to battles, blazes and barricades childrens favourite the Academic Puppet Theatre had to shut down in February. Nevertheless, it is getting ready to reopen this March with a renewed repertoire to bring some laughter back to a scene of tragedy. Operating (not manipulating) puppets is a subtle art that can make kids laugh and adults cry. Whats On meets Mykola Petrenko, art director of the Theatre, to learn more about those who pull the strings behind the show.
